A Review of John Wick (2014)

“…but yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!”

John Wick is one of the best action films of the last five years. (It’s right up there with Mad Max: Fury Road and The Raid Redemption / Berandal). The Matrix is one of my favourite action films of all time and a lot of the stunt crew plus Neo himself have returned.

The action is superbly choreographed. You feel as if you know exactly where wick and his immediate threats are at all times during any given confrontation. It’s over the top and realistic, the best mix. The story is simple but memorable, the soundtrack great.

Keanu can be a little stiff at times but mostly on point as a cold blooded killer the audience can root for, which seems rather a hard thing to do. Willem Dafoe is excellent as ever and the rest of the cast are very good too. The world building was handled rather well, an entire criminal population and economy that feel established, worn in.  A repeat viewing gives a diffrent perspective on the film’s world from the get go that you won’t have the first time around

Overall Rating: 8.9 / 10

A definitive action movie. ‘Nuff said.

The ending felt very weak compared to the rest of the movie. The car chase scene was underwhelming due to lack of perspective, I didn’t feel like I knew where Wick was in comparison to his enemies which is what the rest of the movie had excelled in. The chase was exhilarating none the less. The end fight between the elder Russian mob boss and John was a little too cliché for my tastes. A repeat viewing is definitely recommended.
