A Review of Underworld (2003)

“…you’re in the middle of a war that has been raging for the better part of a thousand years. A blood feud between vampires and lycans. Werewolves.”

I watched this film not expecting much. 12 years after its release it would surely feel tacky. A film about vampires versus werewolves? Twilight and all its negative connotations come to mind extremely quickly.

However after viewing it, I can see how it achieved a cult following back then and spawned many so-so sequels.

The war between the two races feels modern and yet retains its archaic origins. The action is decent but the CGI transformations are obviously dated by now. The is story and world building better than expected but the itself acting bland. The make-up and costume design is very well done and of course the heavy metal soundtrack fits the vibe.

Modern day war between vampires and werewolves. If that synopsis understandably puts you off then stay away, but if you are in any way intrigued you may be pleasantly surprised.

Overall Rating: 7.1/10
