A Review of Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

“The reason I’m in town, in case you’re wondering, is because of a Kansas City Shuffle.”

This movie is bursting with talent; Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci all star. Lucky Number Slevin is an action comedy- it takes inspiration from films like Pulp Fiction. Full of witty dialogue and comically extreme characters, this film is a fun watch.

The film’s action is bloody and impactful. As a first time viewer you may instinctively flinch or jump at the outbursts of violence and the direction of those scenes. At other times the action and story feels Bourne-esque, like you’re a witness to a crime. The comedy is similar, sometimes very Tarantino-like and other times like a rom-com.

The acting is very good but some characters are just a little underdeveloped. The story progresses at a good pace and scenes transition well. The film has a comic book vibe to it, like Kick-Ass. I don’t think the movie was very popular, as I only heard of it through word of mouth. A decent film with a cast like this should probably be well known. The budget was $27m and the profit was only $56.3m.

Lucky Number Slevin does a lot of things. It does each of those things very well, but those things don’t mesh together well. Tarantino doesn’t do rom-coms. That being said the film is very good and sports an all-star cast- it’s worth a watch.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10
