A Review of Speed (1994)

“Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?”

A Die Hard clone, but an Oscar winning one. Many people are unaware that Joss Whedon did uncredited rewrites of the script. Yet the film has terrible dialogue, a terrible plot and terrible characters.

Speed is still however hugely entertaining due to its non-stop action, with intense stunts and explosions. The cinematographer of Die Hard is the director here.

A good score lies behind Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock – the sound editing won Speed 2 Oscars. The film has been cliche’d many times, as I’m sure you’ve heard of the bus that will explode if it goes slower than a certain speed.

In conclusion this is a genre preference. Do you like the dumb fun of the sub-genre of action that is a Die Hard knock-off? If so, you’ve probably seen Speed already. If not, grab some snacks and buckle up.

If that doesn’t sound like your kind of film then stay away – It doesn’t entertain any more than you expect. The stunts are the only reason I didn’t immediately forget this movie.

Overall Rating: 6.8/10
