A Review of Begin Again (2013)

“You can tell a lot about a person by what’s on their playlist.”

Begin Again is a drama about the relationships of two people in the music industry who have hit rock bottom. The story is told well, with the use of flashbacks, giving the two main characters more depth.

Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo are great as a betrayed amateur musician and alcoholic ex music producer respectively. Their characters have layers that we see as the movie goes on.

There are pockets of comedy that are hit or miss. The music in this music based film is decent but not amazing- there are no stand out memorable songs, just some good ones littered about the 104min runtime

Plots involving side characters are unimportant. The other characters act as a vessel for conveying the themes of redemption and forgiveness in the movie. I generally dislike James Corden but in this film he was surprisingly likeable.

Begin Again is a fairly entertaining music drama that manages to get a recommendation from me due to its charismatic leads. This film oozes summer vibes.

Overall Rating: 7.0/10
