A Review of Sicario (2015)

“Nothing will make sense to your American ears…”

Leagues better than most mindless action films, Sicario is a stand out as one of my favourite films in the last few years. A dark thought provoking thriller, Denis Villeneuve follows up Prisoners and Enemy with this excellent film.

The cinematography depicts disgusting scenes beautifully. The soundtrack keeps you on edge. Together, they make you feel very uneasy. Both the cinematography and soundtrack were Oscar nominations.

The use of gore is perfect- not excessive but enough to make you uncomfortable and remember them long after the film is over. The tone of the film is so perfectly dark even in the bright Mexican sun.

There are some truly shocking moments in this movie that made me physically react in a way films rarely do (horror jump scares aside). The action is electrifying and commendably realistic.

The story is well written and gives you little more information than the main character knows, allowing you to piece together the plot as you go.

The movie is exceptionally well acted by the trio playing the main characters; Blunt, Del Toro and Brolin each bringing their respective characters to life wholeheartedly.

Sicario is my second favourite film of 2015 (behind Mad Max: Fury Road, in front of The Force Awakens) and easily one of the best films of the last few years too.

Overall Rating: 9.4/10
