A Review of Captain America: Civil War (2016)

“Stay down… final warning.”

A heartbreaking conflict. The heroes we have seen become so, and then fight side-by-side, turn on each other in Civil War.

An unhinged Stark and a renegade Captain America, both of which we have never seen, do battle for what they truly believe is right and just.

Stark is changed, this is the best portrayal of the character since Iron Man (2008).

Every other character, hero and non hero, gets just enough time to be memorable and relevant to the plot. The laughs are aplenty, with many of the heroes from around the MCU being introduced to each other.

The perfect incarnation of Spider-Man in cinema

However the plot is serious and deals with extremely divisive elements. A personal touch is also thrown in to add emotional weight to the story. There is not a dull moment or wasted scene.

The Winter Soldier is essential to the story

The action is superb with the Russo’s taking hints from the shaky cam of Greengrass / Bourne. The interaction between friend and foe is creative.

What feels like a trilogy between The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron and Civil War comes to a close. It is highly recommended you see those beforehand.

Civil War will definitely breach the $1 billion global gross. I predict a top 5 of all time.

It is my second favourite of all the MCU films, surpassed only slightly by Iron Man.

Overall Rating: 9.8/10

I am less excited for every other Marvel film- every comic book film- from here because of this. I don’t think anything can or will top Civil War.

Guardians 2 will undoubtedly be hilarious, Thor Ragnarok will be great if Planet Hulk is used as a plot point. The perfect on screen Spider-Man is finally conceived but none of these films feel like they can compete with Civil War.

And I’m fine with that.

Lovely review! I think this movie was amazing and it just made my heart complete. I can’t wait to see what X-Men will put on the table now. 😀

    1. Honestly? I hate to be a downer but I think apocalypse looks pretty bad
I saw the trailer for the first time in front of Civil War and it just felt off. Mystique leading the xmen, the cgi everywhere… “I got a bad feeling about this”

Haha wow I have seen all the trailers and I couldn’t be more excited. I guess one can not know how the movie’s going to be until one has seen it. 😀

  2. Nice, short and sweet review. Age of Ultron got on my nerves, so it’s good to see this being a more complete follow up. I like The Winter Soldier’s overall dark tone although the character kind of irked me a little at first. Anyway, it looks as if this will be the third Marvel movie that surprises me with riches (Iron Man and most of Guardians of the Galaxy before the third act were the other two).

    1. What with everyone reviewing it and having no spoilers, short and sweet may be what my reviews are from now on.
Agreed, AoU did not live up to expectations but I did enjoy it a ton more on my second viewing recently!
Let me know what you think once you’ve seen it 🙂
