Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe Entries – Sweet and Sour Superhero Movies

A ranking, one of my earliest posts, updated to include Civil War and added thoughts from re-watches:

Prime Six Blogs

The MCU is the highest grossing film franchise of all time internationally. Here’s my opinions and ranking of each film released to date, up to and including Civil War:

13) Thor: The Dark World (2013)

A fun but totally forgettable film. Chris O’Dowd was the best part.

12) Thor (2011)

Very CGI heavy but not in a revolting way. Getting the audience to root for an arrogant god is tricky therefore the film had conceptual flaws from the start. The execution however was decent and Chris Hemsworth was well cast.

11) The Incredible Hulk (2008)

This entry in the MCU is often overlooked. Edward Norton plays a good Bruce Banner, who seems ever on the edge of control. The Hulk and the Abomination were designed well and their climatic fight was thrilling.

A Review of Captain America: Civil War (2016)

“Stay down… final warning.”

A heartbreaking conflict. The heroes we have seen become so, and then fight side-by-side, turn on each other in Civil War.

An unhinged Stark and a renegade Captain America, both of which we have never seen, do battle for what they truly believe is right and just.

SJMF: My Picks – Best Movie Character Prom Date?

My picks for the battles fought in this episode of Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights!

ROUND 1 – Which Marvel Phase 3 movie are you most excited to see?

Not including Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Black Panther interests me but I don’t know enough to be excited, the same goes for Captain Marvel. Inhumans seems like an X-Men ‘knock-off’. Infinity War is a two-parter and Spider-man is related to Sony. If Planet Hulk is a major plot point of Ragnaork that could pique my excitement.

The film I would want to watch right now the most is Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

ROUND 2 – Best Matt Damon movie?

Saving Private Ryan. His improvised scene with Hanks is one of my favourite scenes of all time.

A Review of Black Mass (2015)

“How come no one has nailed Whitey Bulger? He seems to be involved in every crime in the city, and yet the Bureau keeps saying he’s clean!”

Black Mass touts what some call the return of Johnny Depp, but if so, is it anything more?

Johnny Depp is back on form here in some of his finest acting in recent memory, that’s for sure and a stellar cast and true story are also provided.

SJMF: My Picks – Best “Star Wars: Rogue One” Trailer Moment?

My picks for the battles fought in this episode of Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights!

ROUND 1 – Most encouraging/ best moment in the Rogue One trailer?

My thoughts on the Rogue One trailer are well documented here, but I’d have to say the All Terrain Armoured Transport or AT-AT Walker would be my favourite visual. Donnie Yen is a close runner up. Audibly, I’d go with the soundtrack, followed by Whitaker’s voice over.

ROUND 2 – What standalone Star Wars Story do you want to see next?

The Force Unleashed, adapted for the screen as a dark epic. There is filler that can be removed, there is humour that can be expanded upon. The cast compromises of returning favourites such as Palpatine and Vader whilst introducing interesting new characters.

Vader’s secret apprentice has a storyline that is so hugely impactful to the common known lore of Star Wars that it would be wasteful to not reintroduce it as canon.

Or just a Darth Maul movie, either or.
